I've been looking at various forums on quail raising, and it seems that the word "Jumbo" is a misnomer. Eggs that are advertised as such seem to turn out to be a regular size Brown Coturnix quail. I guess my question then would be if there are truly eggs to be had that are a true "Jumbo" and attain a finished weight of 16 oz. or so.

As a side note, I'm noticing also that the forums that come up in a Google search haven't seen much activity in the last 6-7 years. Are there any quail forums out there that are currently active and up to date?

James marie farms here in louisiana has some very big birds and multiple colors phases as well. The website doesn't provide much info, but plenty of pictures. I have an order in with him now, will be gettinng my eggs end of june

Also, about the forum, this is an excellent place with lots of info and very knowledgeable people here always wanting to talk quail, ask folks here about james marie farms. Robbie is VERY well respected here and in the coturnix quail world

Quail raiser, thank you for your input to my question. I have singled out James Marie Farms as my first source for eggs. The cost to try isn't a game breaker for me and certainly worth the education experience. I have not read any bad reviews on this farm that would be cause for me to not order from them. As to the contrary, I'm finding out quickly that there are a numerous number of unscrupulous folks out there that are taking financial advantage of what certainly could be a good industry.

Please let us know when your birds have matured, how they stack-up against the normal run-of-the-mill "NON JUMBO" coturnix quail for size.

I was hoping to give their AM & JM eggs a try. My intentions are to go for the largest meat bird possible. I'm not looking to start a mail order egg business, or to acquire a flock of pets, I'm looking to put a satisfactory portion size meal on the table for my efforts and time.

I agree with you that this forum seems to be the most active. As I mentioned, my google search into quail forums has lead me to others, that frankly, haven't seen much activity in several years.

Your typical Craigslist ad will always say "jumbo browns" even though they might weigh 9 oz as adults. There is no official standard and it probably makes them sell more eggs.

JMF has great jumbo browns. I personally avoided the A&Ms but he has the biggest available. The white birds can be difficult...they're hard to sex and can be more aggressive.

This is the best quail forum I've found as well!

Hunter, thank you for the education on the AM's, I'll keep their aggressiveness in mind.

I did get a quick reply from JMF regarding quail eggs. It seems he is sold out until fall, which tells me that there must be a high demand for quail eggs, as well as JMF having an outstanding reputation for quality! He doesn't ship during the hot summer weather months.

The other forum that I've eluded to is That Quail Place. I like that forum, for the fact that it has good solid information. Although the forum seems to be inactive and a lot of the latest posts go back 6 years or more.

One section that I did find extremely informative on that forum, and wished that this forum also had, was the Supplier Feedback section. Where one can discuss the pro's and con's of their purchasing / selling experience. As I had mentioned in my previous posts, that I'm finding that their are a number of dishonest vendor's looking to take financial advantage of others in this industry, whether it is through direct advertising or ebay sales. So I definitely believe that a Supplier Feedback section is a good way for an industry to police itself internally by disclosing those unscrupulous offenders.

I'm sure you can find great eggs, locally or shipped to you if you don't want to wait. Make sure to ask how much the eggs weigh in grams, and how big their breeders are on average if not buying from someone reputable.

For jumbos I'd expect 12 grams minimum, 13-15s normal. For the breeders, they should be near a pound at full size, maybe a little less. This is for jumbo browns from a good line.
