Jumbo Cornish X Rocks from McMurray Hatchery

I purchased 7 Jumbo Cornish x Rocks from Mcmurray hatchery, they were hatched Nov 7 2012, they are now 11 weeks old and doing well for the most part. I have been giving them the Broiler supplement that McMurray suggest with these birds and have not had any leg issues. THEY ARE HUGE. I am thinking of letting them get to breeding age and try to cross them with the other breeds I got in order to increase bird/egg size. Hopefully leading to some really big Brown eggers/Olive Eggers/Easter Eggers. Has anyone tried this?

I wish it were that easy, silkie.

I have children who will make pets out of anything if allowed. They won't understand why we have to process these birds if I let them play with the chicks. It is better for me to remain rock solid on not letting them get attached to these chicks. The laying hens we have now as well as all of the roosters (10 extra) are friendly 'pets' who provide us with eggs. The roosters climb on their shoulders, even sit on the top of their heads. Those are the pet chickens. Not these new little guys who won't be around beyond 8 - 10 weeks.

I don't think you'll have many problems. Cornish X are really gross as they get older. All they do is sit around next to the food dish eating and pooping, even if they have a whole yard to play in. They smell bad, they grow faster than their feathers so they're ugly, and if you pick them up they don't feel like a bird the way layer hens do--they feel like a hunk of meat.

My kids love my layer hens, but didn't get attached to the meaties--not even the first batch. And I was worried about being sad to eat them, but they were so nasty it was a relief to process them.

That being said, they are super delicious and worth the work. Mine were from MMM as well, and I didn't restrict their feed or anything. None of mine died before its time.

Whst does mcmurrays suggecsuggest for leg issues iI give mine vitamins and out of 50 only one with leg issues. I got 50 more Wednesday.

Ordering 25 Jumbo Cornish X from McMurray's and wondering if I should get their vaccinations?
I read up on this for my first batch of layers. Merecks and coccida vaccine. THe reasoning was that a broiler producer had better results with coccidia vaccine than without. I have since raised a batch of cornishx and used medicated feed for a while, then give them fermented feed. THey don't free range, but I did cut grass for them at one time, though not sure how contaiminated with coccidia.

depends on the risks at your place of raising

I got Coccidia vaccine for my Red Rangers from McMurray this spring. I imagine getting the vaccine is a personal choice. Just remember that if you get your chicks vaccinated, don't use medicated feed. The medication in the feed can prevent the chickens immune system from properly developing the protection it is supposed to.
