Hi All,

I have 2 Jumbo Pekins - same issue. They are usually so muddy I haven’t closely inspected any of them until one started with a limp. Vitamin B and peas and she was moving great within 2 days and then I noticed her bill like it was scraped or had a crack. So picked her up and closer inspected and it looks cracked. So last night cleaned her up, some peroxide, neosporin. Then I noticed extra mud on the other Pekin and same thing. Same routine. Checked others (buff and blue) and they are fine.
Can someone look at pics and tell me what you think? Did they both get into something possibly?
Also I have a goose so wondering could she bite them to cause that (she has attitude with me, but usually don’t see her ever pick on ducks).
most of the beak there is mud But I can clean them and get better pics.

Nope - they have buckets right now until I put the pool back (Wisconsin winters) and I swap the buckets out twice a day. Does that look like bites then? The only possible thing I could think of is the goose for bites because the pen is electric on the outside and they are in a coop at night that I have secured and mesh from mice, etc...

Could you clean the beak thoroughly and post another picture without the mud?
I cleaned them up and got super close to inspect and took pics. This does not look good. It’s under the bill a little and the one has black spots as well. Looks like a vet call for sure. They are always so covered in mud, but I don’t get how I am just noticing this now.

I think a trip to the vet would be best also.

The most distal sore seen in the picture with the one bird is most concerning to me as it looks to be a fairly large wound, and doesn't appear to be healing well. Let us know how the vet visit goes!

Hi I wanted to follow up. I called my vet and they don’t treat ducks, however they said they would have vet call if they had time. She called and said they don’t see ducks/chickens and I could contact other place but she agreed to look at pictures. She says, that looks like a bite from something, clean soap and water, some antibiotic ointment, and in 2 days if not better she’d prescribe something or refer me.
Soooooooo - my son and I wash the beaks and they get extra peas, some vitamins, some ointment twice a day. Within 2 days they are night and day different. Friday we look and it is looking super good and I was feeling good.
Yesterday morning I go outside and having some coffee and looking into the pen from my patio and I am wondering what the heck the goose is doing, the site looks weird. I stand up and get the view and she is standing on the Pekin and pecking it’s face and beak. I went running up there, stopped the biting. Pekin bleeding all over (looks like a lot with those white feathers). So I grab some chicken wire and close off the goose in a corner. Wash up the duck, and thank goodness it’s not as horrible as the blood scene. Will continue this cleaning again and see how we do.
As for the goose —- she was raised with the ducks and another goose she used to peck at and we gave away the other goose. Over the past month or two she has been getting aggressive with me and sneaking up from behind and biting at me and hissing. Anyway, with 1 shared coop and pen, I had to make the decision. I have never slaughtered a goose before, specially one I raised. I did it, watched videos on plucking and gutting. In the gutting process discovered it’s not a she, it was a he.
I felt bad this morning letting them out of the coop because there was no goose screaming and running around. He was a character, but I think he would have killed the ducks.
So that’s my long winded response and quite the ordeal. Kids asked for another goose and I said no. They said then maybe a few more ducks. Oh boy —I guess we’ll wait and see. For now my pekins are healing.
