Hello, my name's Jill. I am new to this forum and new to backyard bird raising. I am a stay at home wife and mother of 3 humans, ages 12, 4, &19mo. We bought and moved to a new house in April with plenty of room for animals and much of the farm life I've always wanted. About a month ago my husband found someone on Craigslist in our town who was moving and couldn't take their 6 month old ducks with them. He had her call me and we quickly adopted her birds. I've been in touch with her almost daily as we just seemed to really hit it off and became quick friends. We want to raise these birds as pets not food, except their eggs of course. And soon hope to expand the flock with chickens and a few more ducks. In the current situation these 4 ducks have a whole barn to themselves and currently share the yard with my kids but soon a couple pigs. The pigs will have their own pen area and my husband built a large enclosed secure run for the birds for when they don't have yard access. We have 3 Drake's and 1 duck hen. In desperate need of more girls tho her frequent mate does a good job protecting her. The female and one Drake are pekins. There's one Mallard or Rouen Drake (not sure which he is) and there's one khaki Campbell Drake. All are the same age and were raised from hatchlings together. Aside from the ducks we have 2 adult male cats who weren't raised around farm animals but for the last 5 years have been around our neighbors chickens and the cats are curious but really seem to care less about large birds, these days they are so spoiled and becoming elderly they don't care much about any hunting or playing with live food like critters. Tho for some reason the mama deer that lives on our property seems to really dislike one of our cats and will often chase him off lol I figure he probably peed on their bed or something lol cats have a way of annoying wildlife.

As far as the birds go, I'd like to get more females of both duck and chicken varieties. In still learning what it takes to keep them happy and healthy and laying plenty of eggs. We still have yet to see her first egg but I know she's gonna be ready soon. I have plans to plant a garden in their run that they'll have access to whenever the barns open. A low maintenance garden full of all the goodies they like munching on that will keep growing back.

If anyone has any questions or suggestions for me, please feel free to say something. Anything is helpful. I'm researching and taking notes as much as I can. I want them to feel the love we have for them and know we're here to care for them and I want to be able to see that they're happy and not anxious or scared. They've come a long way since we got them and I know we'll only make progress. I just want to do what I can for them and make them happy.

Hi! :frow Welcome to BYC! I know chickens like oregano and find that stuff taking over my garden all the time. When you are trying to grow vegetation for them you will probably have to make some grow cages so they don't destroy it before it has a chance to set in. If the cages are low enough they can eat what grows through without uprooting and destroying the whole plant. Well, I'm not sure that applies to ducks as much as chickens. Good luck with the new farm!

Thank you. ‍♀️ I keep forgetting about the grow cages. Maybe I'll start the garden along the outside of their run and just expand the run once the garden takes off. The initial plan was to put the garden along the outside with a gate inside the run allowing access to the garden... But when I decided I wouldn't really do much Maintenance on that garden and just give them all "all access passes" I figured I might as well just do it right in the run. Maybe I'll do both, expand the run and do a couple cages inside the run closer to the barn.

Do you have any other plant suggestions for ducks and chickens? Preferably any that help boost egg production and shell thickness? And if there is such a thing something to lower the Drake's sex drive lol 3:1 is a little crazy at the moment. She's doing alright but I can tell she's a bit stressed.

Do you or anyone know of any plants that keep mites and other bird pests/annoyances away?

Thank you again

You sound like you have a great flock! Do you have any pictures?

By the way, I am pretty sure nightshade is poisonous to chickens, just don't give them any tomato leaves or raw potatoes or whatever else is in the nightshade family!

Yes I've got a list of toxic items for them. So far anything I've given them I've researched before giving it and if there's any question I just won't. I do have a few good pics. They are still a little iffy about us but being that I'm the one that does their housekeeping and cooking and letting them in and out they see a lot of me and are starting to warm up to me or maybe get a little excited... It's hard to tell sometimes their feelings towards me lol

Those are all good questions, and I'm no expert on best vegetation for chickens or ducks. My chickens barely touch greens and my neighbor's chickens will eat anything green you give them. Also, since I don't have ducks I can't say what is best for their diet. When it comes to chickens, consider all the vegetation treats, and feed them a well formulated crumble or pellet chicken feed.

Oregano may have a healthy affect on chickens. Here is an article on it: https://backyardpoultry.iamcountrys...o-for-chickens-build-stronger-immune-systems/

As for plants that discourage pests, mint is a good one. Thing is, chickens eat most bugs and I do know that ducks love slugs. Here in the PNW that's a good reason to have ducks. LOL

As for mites, I have never had to deal with them. I personally use FGDE in my coops and attribute that to having no mites, but there are a few experts here who will say I've just been lucky. Could be. I just know I haven't had to deal with them. If you decide to use it, get a duster to spread a thin application of it, wear a mask, and spray coops when there are no birds inside.

Beautiful ducks! I think the best way to keep the drakes happy might be to get more hens. (Is that the right term for a female duck?)

I love diatomaceous earth. There are so many uses. However I thought I read somewhere it wasn't safe for birds. Maybe I was reading about another animal I can't remember. But that is good to know. I will double check and definitely be using it out there for them.

Yes mint is a definite as well. That's one I want to put all around the property especially near the house and out buildings to keep spiders away. The only pests that I really just want to avoid are spiders and wasps. Last year the spider population was insane and this year we've been overrun by wasps. I want to get a couple bat boxes as well to help take care of the mosquitoes and wasps especially with standing water outside.
