It's so funny how they pick where they want to lay! We had one hen that had a lifetime pass, her name was Brown Neck (yes, I named her when I was 5 years old--yes, my older sister holds that name against me to this dayLove your childhood memory of having eggs laid right in your hand -- so very cool.
We also raised chickens "the old fashioned way" when I was a kid. My dad had a business next door to our house, and customers got a kick out of a hen who dutifully came in and laid her eggs right on top of his work bench. Other chickens ended up in the freezer, but that clever Shirley got a lifetime pass.
Wonderful story! It's so funny how they pick where they want to lay! We had one hen that had a lifetime pass, her name was Brown Neck (yes, I named her when I was 5 years old--yes, my older sister holds that name against me to this day) and she was an incredible mother, frequently laying 12-14 eggs and only losing 1-2 from incubation to adulthood despite frequent predators. In comparison, our dumbest hen only ever managed to raise 1 to adulthood.
It's not how I would raise my current chickens because we did have a lot of losses, but her instincts were incredible to witness. I vividly remember after chasing off a hawk and doing a head count that she had somehow commanded her chicks to hide in the short grass because I was looking for them and I still nearly stepped on some because they were laying down curled up completely still.
