Jumping on the Chicken train- Newbie questions!

Thank you everyone for your feedback!!!
@aart I do have access to fecal equipment, I guess it never crossed my mind to check a stool sample. But I can if needed, so thank you for that idea.

I think I'm gonna jump in and get what my feed store will have available, being in MN most birds they have will be cold tolerant, and I think I'm gonna get a breed that could be used for meat (per my husbands request, NOT mine...) but mainly that our good egg layers. I think behavior wise, with all your recommendations and research I've done and then being social with My ducks, will just be social with the chicks and offer treats, I"m sure they'll end up our friends.

@paintedChix we have Mallards. Definitely not the most friendliest birds, however my hen and I have a great connection, she'll come when called, quacks and head bobs when she hears me outside to let me know she wants to be out, she'll also follow me around and comes running when the meal worm bag is shaken. I am very fond of her, the drake is newer ( I originally had 3 hens and a drake- the 2 hens and the drake took off once they were able to fly long ranges, my "Mama" (the hen I have) always stuck around and would be the first to return and call to back her friends to return. ) Its quite obvious that the new drake is not used to human interaction, but he bonded well to my hen and follows her around, he has a nasty habit of chasing and "nipping" our dog in the hock when he passes by and they our out. He is starting to become familiar with me and our property, but still very timid compared to my hen.
