Floor brooders are fine if that is what you have. I have started over 500 chicks that way. As I walk up I say "Hey chip chip. Chip chip chip." Sometimes I give a treat and poke at it with my finger like my finger-beak is eating it while saying my little phrase. Out in the yard I say "Hey Ooot." "Hey Blackie" or whatever their name is. They are familiar with their individual names. As long as you keep handling them they will be reasonably tame. The more heavy production types are less friendly. Silkies are like lap dogs. Unless you are going to start a serious amount of chicks the Rubbermaid tub on the floor method is good enough.
