June/July 2013 Homemade Ornament Swap ~~SIGN UPS CLOSED~~

I hope the move is going smoothly. I know it can be tough moving a college student in/out of the house. I hope you received your package from me paulsmuffen.

How is everyone's new ornaments coming along??? I've been so busy with canning and chickens I haven't even started anything new yet. I think when canning season is done I'm going to hide for a while, or stalk people on here.

I try to check messages at least once a day. Yesterday, my hubby and I went to a local flea market and bought cucumbers for pickles, ours didn't produce enough for dill pickles and sweet pickles. DH usually only makes dill pickles

I don't like them as much as sweet pickles. Today we shucked, blanched and froze 72 ears of corn, and then made our pickles. What a day!!!!

Hope everyone is doing well.

Paulsmuffen I figured you were too busy enjoying your new grandbaby,

My garden didn't do anything this year. I usually make dill and bread and butter pickles, good thing I still have some left over from last year. looks like I will have to buy tomatoes if I am to put any up.

dewsdropinwv I did what an old farmer told me to do with my corn, he said shuck it getting all the silk off keeping it dry do not get wet and place in freezer bag freeze, I did this and my corn is good. No blanching which is what I used to do. try it with a few ears and see.
After a day like that you were ready to sit down, hope your DH gave you a good foot rub. I know you slept good.

I haven't started my ornaments for the next swap either, need to go double check when they need to be mailed so I don't miss the deadline!

I realized that my garden is no longer getting enough sun, darn trees keep on growing! My cucumbers are doing ok but the tomatoes are all still green as can be. I planted corn for the first time this year, in addition to not enough sun they are hindered by the fact that I didn't plant the seeds until mid June, just last week those little tassle things (I'm sure there's a real name for them) appeared so I hope to get something from them.

Anyway, we may cut down one of our trees, it's not looking very good lately anyway fear it could fall some day, but probably wait til next spring cause I think that'll cost us some $$.

Katsdar, DH was right along beside me!!!! We made sweet pickles this year and have never done them before. I hope they turn out!!! I slept pretty good considering I just got up about a half an hour ago.... :D

Most of the hard canning is done, we have tomatoes still out on the plants, I hope and pray they wait until DH gets back from work on Tues. or Wednesday.... I hate canning alone. Just no fun.

Chrissy, yes the corn does tasstle and that's what you want to see when planting corn. The saying is knee high by the 4th of July, you will get good production. Ours was knocked down 3 times by storms this year and we still got about 180 ears of corn. We usually get about 250 ears but we didn't plant as much this year. The family is starting to "shrink" with kids growing up and moving out. BUT they always seem to bring back MORE (their own kids) when they move back. :(

I was looking online last night for some different things to make. I found a few cute items I'm going to try. Will post pictures when I get them made.

Sorry that I have been MIA ladies, we have been moving my son back to college & work is really kicking my butt. I see that you received your ornaments, thank goodness, I was getting a little worried.
Our daughter moved into an apartment full time with several roommates June 1 and is living and working in the town she goes to college in. Our move was at the end of May and Lordy I'm glad it is over. Try to imagine SIX twenty something females + their parents, boyfriends and friends trying to all move things in at the same time. Then imagine the discussion about where each piece of living room furniture should go. My DH and I said to our daughter, "Let's go have some lunch" and we did. When we came back they had decided on one solution (mine - brag, brag lol) for the dining room table and the rest of the items were all set.
It's actually liberating knowing you no longer HAVE to do everything for your child.

Do you understand my joy?

I do understand your joy and the empty nest syndrome believe me it doesn't take long to get over, but it did have its major pains then the rearranging of the room starts. Then the realization of wow I could actually run around my house naked without a worry. The thing I found hardest to break was the cooking size, took me forever to learn to cook for just my husband and I and not the whole Army.

My hubby and I are basically down to one child at home, Our 21 year old still lives here, but is pretty independant. She has a job FINALLY!!!!
I'm still trying to get used to cooking for 3 people, but I have had my two oldest daughters move back home with their kids!!!!!! You dont have a chance to breathe sometimes and they come right back. Since the two oldest have moved out again I'm just now getting my breath back. That was a year ago.
I'm just glad they are finally learning that it's not as easy in the real world as they thought it was. Once ALL the kids are on their own I wont know how to act having all that extra space!!!! I'll probably become a hoarder
