jungle foul from hatcheries

I've never seen them from a hatchery. If some do list them, I assure you they are drop shipped from a breeder, so pics wont do much good as they often use multiple breeders for stuff like that.

Try sending a PM to DTchickens. I think he had some when he was younger, and I assume he's got pictures somewhere.

Hatchery junglefowl are NOT purebred and are often quite far from the original Junglefowl. However, I hear that they are remarkable free-rangers, despite their relatively small size.

Wish I could help you more, but I've never actually had any myself. However, I've done enough research and talked to enough people to know that true and pure Junglefowl are very hard to find and are not offered by most--if any--hatcheries.

I don't have any photos of them, but if you go to Cackle Hatchery's website they looked pretty much identical to the Red Junglefowl on that website. Mine may have been a bit larger though however and did not have the white earlobes as Cackle's photo does to my memory. I got mine from Ideal, which to my knowledge has their own breeding birds. Definitely not true junglefowl but for free ranging fowl you can't beat the little things hardly. I wasn't fond of them because of how flighty they were.


centrarchid would be someone to get info from most likely. He's a knowledgeable guy and has some Junglefowl X Game crosses I know, he may even have some "pure" jungles and possibly photos of them. I want to say he got his stock from the same hatchery I did (Ideal).

DT, I would like to hear more about your Ideal junglefowl. How are they as far as laying? Broodiness? Size? I know they are not true Junglefowl, but I'm interested in them because I really like game-type birds that going to be a hardy, feed-efficient, free-ranging homestead bird. Cackle's page on them claims they can lay 300 eggs a year, that seems rather high for this type of bird, right? I've also heard the hatchery birds are just Old English (and they kind of look like it in the photo on Cackle), and I'd be ok with that because I love Old English and would be happy to have some bigger ones running around.

I got Red Junglefowl from (I forgot) either Ideal or Cackle.
It's been a few years. The reason I got them, when I first started with chickens, we had a hawk decide he wanted to take all my bantams.
I wanted to let them freerange, and the Junglefowl population stayed.
Very smart, fast birds, I don't ever remember losing any to a hawk.
But, it was very difficult to catch one! The Junglefowl have a third dimension.....
Usually, you can corner a chicken, and grab it. Not these guys. They go straight UP!
I had to rehome the roo, and after around 7-8 years, I still have a few hens.
They still give me little eggs, and were good broodies.
And all of their offspring (mixed now) still have that flighty thing in them, very hard to catch.

i figured they would not be pure. how close to the actual breed do you think that they come to.

As stoopid mentioned, even my offspring that crossed with games up to probably 1/16th or 1/32nd Junglefowl still were as nutty and flighty as the junglefowl blood.

Sounds exactly like what I want them. I had a trio of American Game that were smaller than large size but bigger than bantam, and they looked exactly like the birds in Cackle's photos. They were WILD too, they escaped from the brooder at a few days old and I was rarely able to catch them again. They could fly about as well as regular birds, they would perch up in the tops of the juniper trees, and I often watched them fly across an acre rather than walk. I never even fed them, just hunted eggs around the yard. The two hens never went broody in the year and a half I had them though. I have been wanting more birds like them, even though they were kind of mean, they were fantastic foragers, even in the desert. They came from a feral flock that had been reportedly running around on a lady's property for 40 years, there were some chicks running around so she let me take them home, but a few months later a couple of stray wolf hybrids killed the whole flock so I never got more than the first three. They were beautiful birds!
