My jungle fowl hen Prissy laid a clutch and was really great at brooding... Until about 4 days before the eggs were to hatch. She's about a year old, we got her in November with her rooster. This is her first clutch with us and we're rather disappointed she gave up. We're going to get an incubator, but it's far too late for these guys.

What makes a chicken give up on hatching the eggs so close to the hatch date?

Inexperience, illness, stress or fear, being forced from the nest, poor nutrition, loud noise, storms, ... In this case I would guess inexperience and, hopefully, she will do better next time.

Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate the advice
