Okay, I've gotten past the suburban-horror-at-processing part, and now I'm thinking I'd like to raise a few meaties. I live on a small suburban lot, though, and I might have 30x20 feet of finished vegetable garden area that I can put a movable tractor for them. I'm thinking I could raise maybe 5 meaties? I have to really make sure they don't stink too badly, and can I order just 5 meatie chicks at this time of year?

Thanks for any thoughts!

I think you'd be fine with five birds on that much property, however, you'll have a hard time finding somone to ship you just five of them. If you don't live near a hatchery, can you piggyback onto someone elses order and have them just get five extra for you? That's pretty common on BYC if anyone lives near you.

Thanks, Jaku, that's probably what I'll have to do. I know there's one place that advertises for pet chickens and small orders, but I think I'd try the Cornish X, so I can process at only 8 weeks.

Seriously, that small taste of that extra small banty roo I processed was pretty incredible! And, after reading more about what is fed to store bought chickens, I can't stomach buying store bought so much...this place has ruined me!!

You might find out where you nearest Ranch Store is. It might be an hour drive or so, but there you could buy just 5 if they had them in stock. Better hurry though, most ranch stores are trying to clear out their poultry stocks at this time of the year.

There's a TS not far from here! I assumed feed stores wouldn't have any more by this time of year. I'll check around, though. Thanks!
