Getting Storey's Guide to Raising Poultry ASAP too.

Thanks again to everyone for their great advice and information.

Hi another fellow Nyorker here. I'm about 20 minutes from Ithaca, NY. I used a heat lamp all winter this year only because our weather has been so cold. If you ever decide you want a roo let me know I still need to get rid of two. A light Brahma and a Buff Brahma. Both are beautiful. But yes free range when you can. I'm pretty rural so I do have to worry about coyotes, fox and bobcat. But my chicks still get out of their pen to free range. Good Luck and have fun!!!!

We're practically neighbors!! I'm in Honeoye. I will keep the offer of the roos in my mind, and perhaps we can help eachother out in other areas as well.

Thanks for the note.

Hi Fingerlakes,

Ideal Poultry www.ideal-poultry.comwill let you order less than 25 chicks. They do charge extra for it though.

However, they sometimes throw in some roos "for warmth" for free. Unfortunately, they don't mark them either.

Have fun on your venture. My chicks are an endless source of delight!

Valerie

Wow! That is good to know. Thank you so much!
We're still in the process of moving and with so many things on our "to do" list, I'm thinking to order the chicks for delivery around mid-June. Does the time of year one orders chicks matter? I mean, is it more expensive in the summer than spring? Can you order them year round? I wouldn't order in the dead of winter certainly, just wondering if I'm running out of time.
