I grew up on a small farm with swine, cattle, and chickens. My grandfather and father would deer hunt and my grandparents would always butcher a couple of hogs each year to put meat on the table for the family. My grandparents and mother would plant a large garden each year to put veggies on the table and in the freezer. Everything was home grown and very little came from the stores. Biscuits did not come from a can when I was a child and our family defined fresh meat as having been on he hoof that morning and on the table that night! I now understand why my grandparents enjoyed that way of life. Everytime I cook a meal with the eggs from my own chickens and/or cook deer meat that either myself or my husband has provided for my family I get a sense of pride and just a darn good feeling that I can feed my family without depending so much on modern stores and such. I also know when my husband and I finlly have childern I want them to live the kind of childhood that I did because I think too many childern will never get to understand the simple life and that is sad. Please add any experiences that are similar to this!
