I opened the coop this morning and found two eggs in the nesting box but also 1 egg in the roosting area, the egg in the roosting area had no shell or membrane and no sign of any shell anywhere!!! Has anyone ever seen this?

They have plenty of quality feed, free choice grit and oyster/crushed egg shells and free range for a couple of hours most days. They get fresh veggies a few times a week and very rarely get table scraps.

Yes, this happens. It is really not a big deal. Most of the time, (as in all of mine over years) they lay perfectly normal, and then you will get a glitch, and sometimes you will get a couple of glitches, and just when you are sure the sky is falling, they start making perfectly normal eggs.

But it does look very weird.

How old are these birds, in weeks or months, and how long have they been laying.
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.

They have plenty of quality feed
What exactly does this mean....brand, model, protein and calcium percentages?

They are 7 months old and I am in Southern New England USA where we have been having a very mild winter thus far.

They eat grumbly farms layer feed with 16% protein. They have calcium, oyster shells & crushed egg shells available to them at all times.

I know people are positive that diet has something to do with this. But truthfully, I am not sure that it does. Maybe a long term effect, but often times chickens really don't live that long. In my experience, it happens, then happens again, and I begin to think I need to do something about it, and it stops. It is more a glitch than a diet, IMO.

I would be very surprised if anyone posted on here that they had always fed the perfect diet, and NEVER had this happen. And if they did, I would still tend to think that they have some superior genetics.
