We have recently bought a 5 acre hobby farm in East Mountain just outside Truro in Nova Scotia and have just finished building our chicken coop and nesting boxes (for 8 chickens) inside our barn. Now the dilemma is what type of chickens to get? We are looking for good layers with a nice temperament that we could also have as meat birds when their laying time is over. They will be allowed free roam in a grassed and fenced off area. We have never raised chickens before but have been planning it for many a year. Any and all information would be a great help, especially from those living in my area.

Some of the best breeds for your situation include: Buff orps (VERY friendly, great layers, meaty) australorps (same as BO) Speckled Sussex (curious, docile, great layers, meaty) RIRs (WONDERFUL layers, meaty, can be on the aggressive side) Wyandottes (great layers, generally docile, meaty) and cochins (very friendly, ok layers and very meaty.)

Welcome to BYC! There are a lot of good, dual purpose breeds out there as Mountain Peeps has pointed out, but I would particularly recommend the Black Australorps. They are very hardy (both heat and cold), gentle and calm, and the best layers of the dual purpose breeds. Whatever you decide to go with, good luck in obtaining your flock.
