Mine free-range during the day with Mr. Goose who keeps them all pretty safe (7 other female ducks), and they are locked up securely at night. We usually lose a few to daytime attacks... last year we lost 2 to foxes, and one flew away (mallard, who's friend was injured and brought into the house, the neighbor dog scared the one on the pond, and she flew away... but we think she's now on the neighbors pond...).. but the quality of life is just SO worth it I think, eating bugs, swimming on a nice pond, getting treats, playing in muck, eating my garden... it makes for happy, happy ducks! And no males (except the goose) so overbreeding isn't an issue. and I feed them, and they get warm water in the winter, morning afternoon and night... and lots of green treats too, like carrot tops, chopped romaine and baby lettuce, peas and mr. goose's fave, pancakes. They're happy.
