Just an observation...

So, I have to ask... do you just pull them and put them in the trash, then... don't even look at them... don't ask, don't tell?
I may struggle with this for a little while, especially with my Dorkings and BBSOs... does it get any easier?

LOL yes i am!

before i open any egg.. i first hold it to feel for movement then i candle to see movement then i pick away at the shell to make a pip to see if i see movement if i do then i open the shell and just pull the chicks head out i leave the rest in the shell then i put the egg back in the bator for about 2 or 3 hours with the chicks head out so it can breathe

if by then the chick hasn't made any effort to get out i then pull it out a little more ( not all the way out because the yolk may not be all the way absorb ) then i put it back in the bator for another hour or 2 and go from there

so far that way has been working great for me.

for the ones that don't make it i have a store bag i double i just put them in that and tie it and take it out side to the trash cans

See, I have that scientific mind too. My husband mentioned that he read somewhere that a turkey grower wouldn't set eggs that didn't weigh out in a certain range, so of course now I'm marking the weight on the eggs to see what the correlation is for my hens.

I usually want to know what happened to the eggs, and run the statistics on the hatch. But I don't usually still have live chicks in the eggs when I stop the hatch... *sigh*
I can't bury them right now... ground's frozen. We actually use any birds that fail to thrive as shrimp/crab bait in the summer, so they get put in the freezer. No waste. Unless they were obviously sick, and then they are not kept. Shrimp love cornish x chicks.

But clear eggs are boiled up, and quitters are gently put in a ziploc bag and placed in the trash to be taken to the transfer station (we don't have trash pickup here).

It has gotten easier for me not to interfere with the hatch, but when they make it out and are obviously substandard, I sure have a hard time with it...

Good for you Mark!

I do the same and have had mostly successes. spraddle leg or crooked legs get worked on and those that make it grow up nice and strong. No sense throwing out an egg without even trying...I've had too many chicks grow up nice and strong to believe that their destiny is sealed at hatching time. JMO.

Well this thread kinda worries me because i have an egg in the bator now that is on day 22 and i candled it (i know i am not supposed to open the bator but i had to check if it was still alive) and it was still moviing. I dont think i have the heart to take it out of the bator now that i know it is alive but i dont know if i can hadle having to cull it if it is deformed. the humidity is about 49%... is that ok. Temp. is 99-100

Any advice??

Yes up the humidity to 60 %. The membrane could be drying out on the chick. If it's pipped the membrane then perhaps you can make a wee hole in the shell to let it breath and go from there.
