I just bought seven chicks from tractor supply and when we got in the car we opened them up and were looking at them when we noticed the other chicks were pecking at this ones foot. We took it out and looked at it and it seems that a part of its toe came off? We don’t know what to do and we’re hoping you guys could help us out please. Thanks

Hello! So sorry about your chick. The pic is a tad blurry, but that’s what it looks like to me. I’d post this on the Emergency thread ASAP so more experienced folks will see it!

Also, you will need to separate this chick from the others until you can treat it and get something like BluKote to deter the other chicks from pecking at it- as soon as they see blood, chickens will relentlessly peck at another birds wound, even to the point of killing it!

Ok thank you

Ok thank you

Definitely looks like a damaged toe. It’ll lose the tip but should be fine. I don’t honestly know what the protocol is for chickens but that’s a common injury seen in bearded dragons and it’s recommended to clean the area with a diluted betadine. But I would not worry too much about this injury. Toes look like worms and hungry babies like to bite at them.

I actually had something similar with a chick I got from Atwood’s! Her toe had been caught in a crack in the feeder, and about half of it was black and shriveled. I originally got her as a companion for a turkey poult, and he didn’t bother it, but the other chicks she had been with did. It eventually fell off on its own. She’s fine without it now, it doesn’t affect her in any way
