Our nest box is 18" above floor ( we plan on 4-6" of shavings) is this too high? Do I need to put in a "step" to get up into the box? I am going to put in two roosts, both at same height that intersect (make an offset T). Do you think this will be OK?
  2. Mine like it ok. I have a ground floor bank of boxes, and the second story about 18" up. All but 2 of the boxes get used regularly.

that is a fine height for the nest box. By the time they lay, they'll be flying around like crazy. Usually people just put a little roosting bar right in front of the box (for them to land on when they fly up).
Make sure the roosts for sleeping are higher up than the nesting boxes, or they will sleep (and poop) in the box.

Your height will be perfectly fine. But be sure your roosts are higher than your nest boxes. If the roost is lower they will roost in your boxes and make a mess with their poo.
