Just curious who else is living super frugal

hmmm sounds like the makings of a B thiller movie . . .

Ya, sometimes the nest has to be destroyed.

I have a question for my super frugal friends. I normally put a lid cover on my toilet seat cover as the finish on the plastic lid started to peel some years ago, and beeing , lol frugal I opted to make a cover. THat over has passed its prime some time ago, so is now in the trash.

ANyone know of a good way to seal finish the plastic that has the outer layer of thin plastic coating peeling? Or I can sew another cover when I find time come Christmas time.

Only thing that comes to mind is to scrape off what's peeling and spray with a polyurethane or maybe paint it? Or stick on shelf liner might work? Contact paper, I think its called.

The plastic peeling is an issue. the wood inside commercial toilet seats is very absorbant and once the seal is cracked it starts fluffin. I would invest in a good quality toilet seat... Just for sanitation... But if its just the lid Cover it. But it will disintegrate eventually.

You could also make a new lid out of plywood do a thick layer of Polyeurethane and cover that. The hardware for the original toilet seat sometimes can be removed and reused....

For what its worth.... You can preserve Butter. Preserving it intails of converting it to Ghee. I am making some right now for my sons birthday.... Same process is Clarified butter..... If you take the butter and melt it in a container till its mostly oil with milk fat on the bottom... and some on the top... Skim that all off and what you get is butter fat.... Which has a shelf life much much longer than your consumption of it is. But Ghee goes through the cannin process quite well.

So to preserve butter.... Do Ghee.

Made some tonight for my sons birthday this weekend.

Hi,
I've been following this thread for a short time now and want to say "thank you" for sharing some great tips!

I have a question about septic tanks...sorry if this has been asked/answered already. Someone mentioned to my husband that yeast could be used in place of a commercial septic tank treatment every month. I was wondering if anyone used yeast and if so, how much do you use?

Thank you!

I was told by my sceptic guy ""NO"" on additives. It breaks down the organic material and emulsifies the fats and the fats make their way into your leach field and that kills the leach field.... No leach field No septic. At least our sceptic tanks are designed to allow the fat to float up to the top and the liquid to filter out through the leach field.

Mine had to be pumped about every four years because the leach field was dying.... Too old not done right in the first place. and mine is serving for a single occupant... The tank was good for a family of four.

sorry...

Oh and I am in California with VERY good perk rate.... Decomposed granite....

Thanks Deb, glad I asked before we tried it! Our tank is probably as old as the house (25 years) and we sure don't want any problems with it.

If it aint broke.... LOL. Talk to your septic guy... Mine only costs about 200 bucks to have pumped and cleaned and inspected. My tank was put in in 1984 so right now its about 30 years old. My guy told me I could baby it for another ten years if there is just me on it..... Oh and I can and will put in a new leach field... its a new product called ""Infiltrator"" takes alot less square footage than a standard leach field Plus you can lay it along the borders of the yard.....

When the time comes I will decide to do the new leach field OR just go to a composting toilet system..... The cost will be the same.

Also, call around for estimates. If they give you some mumbo jumbo about extra cost for "back flushing" hang up and take your business elsewhere. Back flushing is simply pumping some of the effluent back into the tank to break up any sludge at the bottom. There should be a single flat fee for getting your tank pumped. Also, keep in mind that these guys make a living pumping tanks. So, they're going to recommend frequent pumping! You want that sludge to settle at the bottom of the tank. any advertising that talks about eliminating the sludge, is trying to sell a product that will send it into your leach field. WHAT PERCHIE GIRL SAID!!!! Perchie, miss you at the other place.

I was fortunate that I got one fellow who is the business owner and not a "hard sell"... Then When I had some issues again I got a septic tank guy who specializes in "fixing issues" Both told me the same thing.... And that my issue was Bad plumbing as well as an old leach field...

LOL... cant handle two places at once.
