Just curious who else is living super frugal

Well here's the clay bread oven we built over the weekend. Waiting on it to dry now and hoping it doesn't rain.

This is just the first layer and base. If you want to see more pics of it you can find them on our blog http:/turkeywoodsfarm.blogspot.com/. They're also posted on a thread in the self-sufficiency topic. We spent money on sand for it, about $20 which we are using in our fire pit and in making more cob later on for a rocket mass stove to heat our greenhouse this winter so it will get double or triple duty. Everything else was free or we already had.

pretty cool idea

Thanks, we lit a fire in it yesterday and the door was perfect for drawing air in and letting smoke out. We're trying to keep a small fire in it to get the inside drying but it's been wet around her for the last few days. Hoping for sun for the weekend.

I have been bugging my DH to build me a solar oven. Takes a long time to cook roasts or potatoes but doesn't use electricity and I can't be trusted with fire.

Although I have been curious about learning how to cook in a cast iron camping oven (dutch oven with a flat lid) using coals. I heard you can cook bread in that. I have learned to make jams this year. I store grains in bulk for making bread and for the chickens. Slowly I am trying to learn to be more self-sustainable ways of living. This economy has taught me to enjoy the simple pleasures. Home-cooked meals now are sometimes more enjoyable than eating out as I have been working on my culinary skills. I can't eat out much because of my MSG allergy.

We paid our home and two cars off about 5 years ago-a blessing as 4 years ago my husband lost his job. Over the years we have planted apple, peach, plum, pear, persimmon, cherry, and fig trees...so I can, freeze, and dry those. My huband plants a vegetable garden each year and we put up what we don't eat. I have an herb garden and dry or use my fresh herbs-this saves a bunch of money at the grocery. My husband also hunts deer so that offsets our meat bill. I bake my own bread when I have time and we eat out rarely. Our sweet chickens give us enough eggs for ourselves and some to sell to offset feed costs. I now pay closer attention to coupons, house temperature and gas prices. My husband has called to negotiate prices with phone, internet, and cable...he has had some success with that...they would rather offer a deal/promotional rate than lose you altogether as a customer...I've enjoyed reading some of the posts here! Lots of great ideas!

Personally, I think that, since they were 'city folk', and just doing it for the T.V., that the second the camera was off they were spitting it out and calling their doctors for anti-biotics and rabies shots ! Every New Yorker I've ever talked to has called them "disease infested rats with wings!"

I would eat pigeon any day, but them thar city folk jes' cracked me up!!!
