My nesting material initially is the pine shavings that I use to cover the floor of the coop. Will this entice the girls to poop in the nestboxes? They did not when the boxes were empty, but will they associate the material w/ where to poop? I hope not. What do you guys think?

No association. They poo wherever they want. Don't worry. I might get one poop every few weeks in the nest box and I use pine shavings for both nest and floor.

I've never had poop in the nest box, but I use hay.

I have nest boxes plus a larger community box. None of my gals are laying yet, though a few are very close. I am always cleaning poop out of the nest boxes, especially the community box, which is low on the wall so the Jersey Giants will not have problems accessing it when they get bigger.
