We've all heard the saying, a face only a mother could love. I fully believe we backyard flock owners are guilty of that sentiment. All chicks are beautiful, right? So are all ducks, turkeys, geese or whatever your backyard fowl of choice that you have.

But face it. Some of them are in that 'only a mother could love' category, even if that mother is the humans that are raising them in a brooder.

I'm currently brooding 5 Egyptian Fayoumi chicks. Not only are they not the most beautiful chicks I've encountered but they have the personalities to match....sorry babies, but it's true. True to their description, they are flighty, suspicious, non cuddly, unfriendly and a few other bad personality traits that I haven't come up with yet. BUT. They are resistant to Marek's disease, which I have been fighting for the past 4 years and hope with the injection of these little creatures genes in my resistant survivors, they will strengthen my chicken's gene pool in the long run. So I will tolerate their lack of beauty as chicks and their quirky personalities and love them the way they are.

But in the meantime. Let's have some fun with it. Got a picture of a truly homely chick whether it be a Turken or just some poor little creature that popped out of the egg and when you first laid eyes on it said "Oh, Look at the poor little thing! It's so ugly it's cute!".

So here are my 'they are so ugly they're cute' offering. My 5 really homely little 3 week old Egyptian Fayoumi chicks.

But their 'mamma' still loves them! LOL!
