Hello everyone. I recently got a homemade coop/run from a friend and I'm getting supplies together to start a flock. I've been looking for buff orpington, leghorn, and ameracaunas. Ill post a picture of the coop tomorrow. Im looking for any helpful pointers on specific supplies and ways of keeping them happy and healthy throughout the winter. Thanks

Welcome to the BYC flock. The Learning Center is the best place for you to start. It probably will answer most of your questions. For others there are specific forums ie,
coops, feeding, incubating, that will get specific information to you. You may also want to post on your state thread and hopefully find some chickeners near you. By and large the majority of chicken folks are generous about sharing their knowledge.

A very warm welcome to BYC from Kenya!

I am sure that you will enjoy the site as much as everyone else.

I was born in Des Moines and still have relatives in IA...you guys do get some pretty cold winters there. Fortunately chickens generally do better with cold weather than they do with heat. Here's a link to get you to the IA state thread:

About the Ameracaunas you are looking for...usually what you'll find are really Easter Eggers. They are pretty mixed breed chickens that lay colored eggs.

Have fun getting into poultry, it's an interesting and rewarding hobby!

I learned the hard way feeders and waterers need to be hung off the floor high enough they can't poop in them. That means high enough to just allow your smallest birds to get water and feed. All my waterers are heated but I unplug them in warm weather.
