I say spring time is the best, get some sexes birds, have a nice coop to have when there ready to go into it. Get only a number you can handle ,we got 6 but one was a rooster,he went to a great new home, but some are not so lucky. Plan your coop to have it big enough for your girls to live comfortable( I say save up and plan your coop accordingly with time and info. I am a first time bird owner, and it's been amazing. We got birds for our climate, and we loved on our girls from day one! We tamed them right down, and now that they are almost 6 months old there so tame and follow us around. I planned for a year, saving money, plans and then my birds. Good luck it is so worth it. And I live in the city and my neighbors are all on board with my girls. They started laying this week, it's so fun getting fresh eggs!
