Right now I'm to the point of researching what birds I want to purchase. I thought I knew what I wanted, Barred Rocks all the way! But after visiting a few stores and reading up more, I'm more interested in a mixed flock maybe?

I live within city limits so have a 4 bird limit. Locally I have Black Sex Links, Buff Orphingtons, Cuckoo Marans and Barred Rocks (there are more, these are the ones that caught my eye). Would one of each be too much? Or would two and two be better for them? I know I've read BR's can be bossy and BO's can be overly docile...

In the end I'd really just like a small flock of family friendly, cold and hot hardy decent layers. And would it be too much to throw a ducking into the mix?? :)

I have BSLs, they are friendly for the most part, but demanding. They will follow you for food (even if you are just going to the car)
I have/had BR. The "normal one" was bossy I have a "rescued" BR (was from a hoarder and had an awful first few months to life) This one never knows what to do with herself, but is very friendly (well we rescued her and I was the first person to give her chicken food not trash)
I have a NHR BO cross they are ok, but I love their children they are very BO personality wise (mellow, go with the flow)
If you can only have 4 birds go with the BSL because they will give you lots of eggs, or do 2 BSL and 2 others that you find nice. I can't tell you what to do, but ideas.
