Update and pics.....

WOW! This was one crazy ride! So when I last posted I had six chicks that I had removed from the bator and I was horible worried that the rest wouldnt hatch. Last night they started popping out like popcorn! lol... And Ill tell ya, with every 2-3 chicks I popped the lid of the bator and placed them in the brooder to dry and lo and behold...the earth didnt stop spinning. As a matter of fact the chicks just kept on hatching. So by the time I went to bed last night I had a total of 17 chicks hatched and looking fantastic. More to hatch and they were still pipping and zipping away. Then the heart attack...we had a storm last night and when I got up this morning a breaker for the back part of the house had tripped...

Temperature was 74!!! Two babies were huddled together and the remaining eggs were cold. I grabbed the 2 babes and quickly put them in the brooder. I picked up each egg that had pipped and listened...CHIRP CHIRP!!!! They were still alive!!! I put the lid back on, covered the bator with towels so it would heat up quicly and said a prayer but honestly I didnt expect anymore to hatch. I put hubby on chick watch while I went to work but right before I left one more chick had hatched. He texted me around noon and said I had 3 more babies!!!! I got home at 3 pm and put those babies in the brooder. One more has hatched but the yolk sac was not absorbed. I have him/her wrapped in moist washcloth, in a cup, in the bator. Im hoping for a miracle with that once since its a LOT of yolk and not just a little. I have another one zipping away right now. I am stoked!!! And thankful....oh so thankful for the people and knowledge to be gained here. You guys deserve a hand....

because without the expertise and wisdom you so freely give...I wouldnt have known what to do...so thank you!
Some things I learned:

Everyone has differing opinions and ways of doing things when it comes to incubating. Take the information and do what feels right for YOU.

I will never use the carton method again! My babies were climbing all over the eggs and touching that heating element and looking like this when they did it>>>>>

A bathub makes an awesome brooder! Not sure who posted that on BYC but a big

to you!

If you open that bator during lockdown the earth will not open up and swallow you and your babies!!!

I had temps during incubation ranging from 97 to 102. I added no water (dry incubation). During lockdown I had temps ranging from a low of 74 (for at least 3 hours) and a high of 101. I have never incubated chicken eggs before and I have the crappy little still air LG.

Out of 27 eggs I have hatched 23 chicks. Of the last 4, 1 is zipping and 2 are pipped. These are all mutts from my flock
