My chicks from McMurray were supposed to come between tomorrow and wednesday. However, I received a call from the post office warehouse in Easton (about an hour away) that they arrived there today (Sunday). I was not expecting a call on Sunday! I had to rush and get their brooder ready (didn't take much, really, its still set up from the last batch). Then I hurried to Easton for my chickies! There was another box from McMurray there for someone else in the area, which I thought was cool. I wonder if they got Red Stars too? Anyway, they're all home now and in the brooder, happily peeping! I received 26 Red Star (13 boys, 13 girls) and 1 free rare chick. I have noooo idea what the rare chick is. Its different shades of gray with dark legs (and darker gray on top, lighter on the bottom). Any clues? I can't post pics cause their brooder light is red and the pictures never come out right. If I take him out later/tomorrow I'll post a pic. Right now, I'm letting them drink some water to re-hydrate before I go bothering them.

Congratulations!

Isn't it exciting! I wish I knew what breed your baby is, maybe someone else will come along, that will know? Enjoy them!!

The feed store I got my chicks from ordered from McMurray. They recieved half their chicks (and half my order) on a Monday. The other half they recieved on that Friday. I had to make two trips to pick them up. There must be something going on with their shipping/hatching.

Congratulations on happy healthy chicks! Can't wait to see a picture. I hope the other chicks at the post office are able to get home soon. I ordered from Meyer and am expecting them in 2 weeks...can't wait!

I got that "you're chicks are here" call on a SUnday ,too.!! And my brooder wasn't quite ready either. Despite the unexpected drive to the regional distribution center, it was a relief to pick them up though and not wait for the precious cargo to arrive at the local PO the next day. We only lost 2 the first week. ANd our freebie is a bit spastic; not sure what it is, fits your description of yours--Someone in another thread said the freebies are usually males

Why would they give away a valuable pullet.

Enjoy your chicks!

McMurray has done that to me a couple times, too. I'll be expecting chicks to arrive on a Wednesday or Thursday, and instead I'll get the call from the post office at 7 a.m. on a totally bizarre (and seemingly IMPOSSIBLE) day like Monday. Then it's the fun panic of sending DH into town to pick up the chicks while I frantically locate all the parts and pieces of our brooder arrangement and clear a space in the living room close to the wood stove. I don't think we've had any casualties from the process yet--just a fun, frenetic morning when it happens.

Congrats on the new babies and we're lookin' forward to cooing over your baby pictures!

His legs are very long compared to the other chicks. He's the only one I coddle, I've decided he's going to become more of a "pet", as long as he turns out to be sweet ... not sure why. I think because my chickens are for business purposes and they're just so cute/fun that I had to keep at least one for myself!
