Just had our first predator attack... not sure how to prevent it from happening again...

Really? I never tried Night Guards, but a red light in our chicken coop worked really well for a long time. I've never tried them but it sounded like a cool idea, that sucks that they don't work.

If your friend is a bear hunters guide I would definitely have him help. I would not go after a bear of that size if you didn't have experience.

There was another post earlier about a bear and it tore open someones coop and killed several of her hens. She is worried about her child!! Kill the bear, I remember a news story several years ago about a family in NY (I think), they let their dog out in the morning and a few minutes later it came running back in the house followed by a bear the parents were both injured but luckily their kids were ok. Very scary!!!

I thought mountain lions (which although people will tell you otherwise, do live as far as Eastern Kansas; I've seen a few out here before) were scary.

Yes, and there is a story of a man in Florida that shot and killed a bear defending his home and children who went to jail for it...not clear on the charges...they said he should have tried to scare it off first....ha.
