My hen, who lost her BFF about a month ago, has really bonded to me. She was always tame before, but now she demands to be let inside after the kids go to school. Her latest thing is coming in and jumping up on the couch (after she chases the dogs away) and taking a nice nap! I love it! She makes all these cute little baby chicken sounds (like little peeps) while she's sleeping. Sometimes the dogs can sneak up next to her and nap with her. When she's done with her nap, she hops on my lap or shoulder while I am checking emails at the computer. It is just so sweet!

I am wanting to get her another friend, but I am kind of afraid that either she will bully, or be bullied by, another chicken (or 3!). Has anyone integrated a spoiled lap chicken in with some other hens into her home? Or should I just wait til I am able to keep them permanently separated?

Anyway, just wanted to share about my sweet hen!

That's so neat!
We have one that loves to jump on me and Jim, but she hasnt tried coming in. Well, take that back, one of our hens, will tap on the window, come in, and be carried around to tell the girls good morning. Then she goes back outside, no probs. lol

Oh, she comes running in the backdoor, around through the kitchen for a quick stop at the dog water (apparently dog slobber makes it taste better!

) then around to the treat box, then tears around the corner as fast as she can, flies up, scares the dogs off the couch by flapping at them, struts a little bit, then lays down for a nap!

It's hilarious!

I was making us...yes...me and Petunia the Chicken, oatmeal today and she tried to jump into the bowl while I was carrying it to put outside for her! I swear that chicken has no patience!

Love that bird! I've started looking for reasonable large bird cages on craigslist to move her inside. I think we'd all be happier! LOL!

If you like things how they are, and she is happy, which it sounds like shes beyond happy, she could be your house chicken. She sounds like a real sweetheart!

What breed is she?

sred98,

That's really cool you are so close with your chicken. I have a few hens and a roo, but they are not quite as tame as what you have described. I can pet them, but they get pretty freaked out when I reached down to pick them up. Did you handle her alot from a young age? Has she always been so friendly, or has she eased into this behaviour?

I handle everything. My horses think they are overgrown lap puppies!

I've caught the turtle bathing with the kids and he comes when called, so I guess it's just natural that the chicken naps on the couch! LOL!

This is my dark Cornish. She was always my favorite out of the 2 hens I got. I had a beautiful delaware colored OEGB that a hawk ate right in front of us.

She was pretty tame, but thought Petunia was her mom, so whatever Petunia did, she did too.

Petunia is just bossy! LOL! Not just with the animals, but with us, too. But she did get a lot tamer when Roger died. I think she was just lonely. Now, she enjoys being inside when it is cold! She also loves gardening with me. I'll pick up a rock and if there are slugs under it, I'll say, "BaGAW!!" and she comes running! LOL!

Okie-the chocolate covered cherries are hidden in a suitcase in my closet!

That is about the cutest/funniest thing I have ever heard. If I invited my hens to nap on the couch, they'd cock their heads and say, "Well, what are you gonna do for me in return?" They are, at best, scheming little opportunists...

Seriously though, what is the poop situation like on your couch? Are you just giving that area to her for good, or using puppy pads or what?
