Just hatched out Delaware/Golden Laced Wyandottes. Why do they have an almost chipmunk pattern?

Here's a few recent photos, she's about 8 weeks old now. No clue what she is, came from eggs bought off a road side stall. Some hatch mates were black with barring so maybe part barred rock?

Wow that is so cool!! I love her feathers. It looks like there's some lacing in there. It seemed she had stronger barring in the first photo. What neat feathers.

Here are some updates 6 weeks old pictures of my little flock. The feathers are so pretty with the barring and lacing mixed.

Adorable, bet the little roo will grow up to be stunning! I do wonder though if using a barredXlaced hen would produce sex linked chicks when crossed to a non barred roo. I just might see for myself, assuming my little pullet is barred with lacing. A project to look forward to next spring :D

Ooh that's a great idea. I am curious about that. I will keep my eyes out for that post.

It could, though whether or not you'd see the characteristic barring spot would be dependent on what sort of E genetics the chick inherits. I know for certain that chicks who are E get the spot (so using a solid black or blue rooster should work), but it often isn't visible on chicks who have patterned down (like the chipmunk patterned chicks at the top of this thread, who are all barred but don't have the spot).

Chicks are 8.5 weeks old now. They are so pretty. My cockerel is so much bigger than the rest. I think he's the only cockerel and I really do not want to eat this guy. He is pretty. I wish someone could use him for breeding. Seems an absolute shame to kill this boy. I see some of the gold leaking in now from the mothers side. It's on his hackles and saddle feathers. It's very light right now but I bet it will darken. I don't know if my camera could pick it up. I like this cross. The chicks came out so unique and very nice looking.

Update: these chicks are now 24 weeks old. Their feathers have come in so pretty. Luckily the male was able to be rehomed and his family adores him!!

Different hatch from a broody 21 weeks old now. Their feathers are so pretty and I love how the makes have the gold feathers coming through sporadically. Beautiful cross.
