Just Hello from wisconsin

HI, I am from the Kenosha WI area, and we have a horse farm. I met someone on a trail ride and we started talkin chickens' and eggs. It's something I always wanted to do, Get a few, but now more serious. I thought I better educate myself. I just want some easy keepers. We get nasty winters, and some good egg layers. I will have a small area attached to our horse barn indoor arena.. I guess i just need some info on chickens? care needed? diseases? best feed? What to do? what not to do? I guess I want to learn from others mistakes or great ideas before I jump in b/c my animals always come first.
