Shipping eggs in wood shavings is a classic method of shipping eggs.

I ship a lot of eggs.. THe most recent was to a CA address and BOTH boxes received from 2 different sellers had the same damage. Hmmm... must be the handliers.

Mailing eggs is a crap shoot. Most of the time all goes well. SOmetimes it doesn't. Just no way to predict with 500, 000 employees . . . . .

I still don't understand why the USPS supplies boxes that don't hold up to their handling . . . .oh I know why . . . it is about stastitics. ANd insurance ANd if the customer bitches enough, tjhier might be a refund. Oh wait . . .. we are talking eggs here . . . .NO refunds.

Yes I agree that sellers need to make a reasonable effort to pack the eggs well. BUt even then I have seen total destruction at the hands of the USPS.

All I'm saying is it should be noted that is what you use as packing material. I've never had any luck hatching anything shipped in wood shavings and if I had known, I would have saved my $$ for someone else.

it also depends on the shavings too IMO... the large hard flakes, nope. useless for shipping, but the light fluffy stuff I use in the baby brooders works great. better than shredded paper IMO. but I only use that as a last resort, if i'm out of peanuts. and everything is double boxed, so what's on the outside layers, to me, isn't as critical as what's in the inside box with the eggs.

I completely agree with this. The stuff I use in my brooders would be fine because it is light and soft. What was used wasn't and there was no double boxing. Frankly, I believe you should post what you use as packing material and let the buyer decide if they wish to take an added risk.

Pips and Peeps uses shredded paper and they shipped all the way across the country and not one broken egg, and it is not double boxed. I think she does an awesome job at packing. I've never had good hatches when stuff comes in saw dust too much shake room

I think it is also the weight of the heavier shavings on top of the eggs that ultimately breaks some. We all know the USPS isn't too kind to those boxes. Give the eggs a softer medium to cushion them in. And yes, she does a great job packing!

THere are many ways to pack eggs that are sucessful. IF you have a preference, please ask the seller BEFORE bidding.

THis is a link that was brought to my attention. I have never been told about this labeling by my post office despite the number of eggs shipped. THey just try to advse me to put "fragile" on it-- really??

IN the future I will list LIVE EMBRYOS- EGGS and see if they get better treatment. Perhaps we can run a campaign, all eggs shipped in Sept and then compare notes. WOuld be interesting, wouldn't it??

I CAN say that eggs I've received with this on the box tended to fare better than others... and eggs I've shipped (using the same box LOL) also had excellent hatch rates. so there may be something to it. I hadn't thought about it till I read that thread.

Best hatching eggs I have ever bought on line were off Ebay, yep, sixty percent hatch rate. She packed incredibly well, and VERY fresh eggs. I only buy hatching eggs if they have 100 percent positive feedback. Wish we could get that kind of info here.......... Great packing, and fresh eggs help your odds immensely!

the best hatching eggs I have bought may be from madamwlf. shipped 12 eggs 11 developed 1 quite early. 10 made it to lockdown. 8 chicks out 1 pipped upsidedown and died and one had not pipped yet but I have not given up yet.
