Just "inherited" 2 hens.

Welcome to BYC. So sorry about the loss of your brother.

Good luck with enlarging the coop and giving the hens a happy home.

Feel free to ask questions, we are here to help.

So very sorry for the loss of your brother. He had to have a lot of love inside him to raise such docile chickens. I have heard that breed is not the friendliest. You are very clever and resourceful to have put together living quarters for them with so little notice. Very glad you joined the flock, and hope to hear more from you.
Yea, they are extremely tame from my limited experience with chickens. They let me pick them up without any fuss, don't even try to get away. In fact they come to me whenever I open the cage. Not much into petting but I don't think any chicken is :)

Sorry to hear about your brother.

Your set up for them looks very nice. In fact, I think I want to borrow that idea for the short ladder sitting area outside the coop, I think my girls would really like that. One thing you might want to do is raise up their food and water dishes so they're off the ground. That will help keep the straw out of the water bowl. It could be as simple as getting a flower pot you can rest the bowl into so it's sort of chin height for the chickens. Or flipping a broad-based flower pot over so that the bowl can sit on top of it (vs. in the mouth of it).

I had an old ladder that was cracked on one end and thought they would like it. I want to build them another level just below the roof for sleeping but will get to that (and will likely just put a single broomstick thickness dial right across from one end to the next as I have no more ladders lying around).

I want to make them better food and water dishes, one of the main reasons I joined was so that I can get some ideas. I was thinking something like "grandpas chicken feeder" but made out of ABS or perspex/plexiglass as I have access to a C02 laser cutter or possibly one of the drain pipe feeders I have seen on the web. I was also thinking of putting the food and water onto it's own platforms (with a roof for the food for rain) to give them a little more floor space for scratching around.

Good luck with the hens and coop building, the girls look like red sex links, sold under various names depending on the hatchery, Red Star, Golden Comet, ISA Brown etc, they are really really good layers of brown eggs.
Thank you for the information :) I'll look them up.

Good morning and welcome to BYC!

My condolences to you & your family on the loss of your brother. I hope you have a lot of good memories of him and maybe you get some of those from his birds.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Nice to have you join us.

@AstroTurf , that's a great photo of your brother and the chicks. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Wonderful chick pictures! My girls used to be that small, a long time ago. Kids today, they grow up so fast, lol. Love the photo of the little one sleeping.
