I am new to chickens; I got my first group in mid-March. I wanted Buff Orpington's, but couldn't find any in the area. I really didn't want to order through the mail. I bought 8 Rhode Island Reds and 16 Black Australorps. One of my little Australorps didn't have eyes, or they wouldn't open. She couldn't find the food or water. I tried to hand feed her, but she died after 2 days. I went back to get a replacement, but the Australorps were gone, so I got 2 Black Sexlinks. So now I have a total of 25 chickens. They are doing very well and I'm having a blast!
I came across BackYardChickens.com back before I bought my chicks when I was looking for information about the different breeds and how to care for them. I didn't join at that time though. I now thought I should do some more research to learn more about caring for them as they should start laying in a couple months.
I love to garden and sew.
The only other animals I have at this time is two cats. Next year I'd like to get a couple goats. I'm a widow for over two years now. I was only 56 when I lost my husband. We had been married 38 years. It has been the hardest thing I've ever been through, but God has walked with me every day. I have two sons along with their wives and 6 grandchildren.
I'm really looking forward to getting to know "chicken folks".
