I’m a true blood Cajun from Louisiana and I’ve been wanting to start a small flock of chickens for several years, but now I’m standing on the shore, and nervous about diving in! Any words of encouragement?
By the way, I’m a retired teacher so my budget is very limited.
I'm not usually on the "Welcoming commitee" but I saw your post and wanted to say jump in and say hello. There is an "Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps" page you may want to check out for locals. The most active are in the B. Rouge area.
I have a literal back yard flock in the city. Even here my main problem is predators, mostly possums. The key 'to me' is to have a predator proof area where they are safe at night. When I rebuilt their coop I made it tall enough for me to walk in and all 1/2" hardware cloth. A roofed area with a roost and the rest is open air. They are hearty and down here they do fine without heat, even when you have to break ice in the morning.
