hi my names bev and ive just joined, only had chickens a week but loving it already, got 3 for now lol,my o/h got them and the coop and run free from someone giving up,dont know what breeds they are if anyone can help,we live in wakefield, yorkshire,uk,originally i wanted some polish after seeing and holding some and then hubby found ones ive got now lol,we also keep koi and have 2 ponds, also have a little dog who is doing our heads in barking at the chucks all the time,we wanted to free range them but after a couple of introductions and then letting them out,our little dog decided to chase one when it ran, terrified me as i think she would of hurt it if hubby hadnt grabbed her, planning on building a bigger run next month if funds allow, although o/h wants to incorporate a coop in this and use coop and run we have now for polish if i decide i still want some, all advice welcome,we are total newbies at this haha, cheers bev

Just a word of caution, unless a dog has been trained to leave the birds alone, he will hurt or even kill them. Not to be mean or vicious but because they "play" with the chickens and the chickens always lose that game. It's best to keep the chickens in a run or leave the dog inside the house when the chickens are out.

If you haven't already seen it, the Learning Center is full of good articles to help you get off on the right foot:

Almost forgot, the 2 reddish chickens you have look like Red Sex Links to me. RSL's go by many names but they are a hybrid, not a true breed, and are egg laying machines. I can't make out the grayish one very well but maybe someone else here can tell you.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Please keep the dog and chickens away from each other. It seems the toy breeds especially love to chase chickens. Dogs + chickens usually = dead chickens. You never hear of a chicken killing a dog.

Hi :welcome Bev

Glad you could join the flock! I'm in Yorkshire too just down the motorway from you. I too agree with above posters about your dog and the chickens. You will need to keep them seperate at all times. My Mum has just had this happen to her and it was horrid. Her pullet escaped its run and her dog a terrier killed her straight away.

Looking at your birds you have 2 sex links or warrens. They have many names as they are a hybrid as NorthFLCHick said. Your other lady looks like a blue bell, also a hybrid and all great layers.

I keep polish and have some available if you are interested, just drop me a PM. I would point some things out to you about them though. They don't do well in a mixed flock so may not get on with ladies you have now. You would more than likely have to keep them seperate. The crest attracts a lot of attention from other birds and they are easily picked on and bullied. The crest also limits the vision of them and they get easily spooked and lost. Crests and eyes need to be checked regular for mites and lice. They are a breed that need a little more attention and care.

Wishing you the very best of luck with your girls in the future. Enjoy BYC :frow

thanks for the warm welcome, ive been looking around and learnt so much already, and im really jealous of you guys in the usa with your beautiful huge coops and runs,as for the little dog, well she wont be getting close enough for another go at them, hubby has said hes going to build a larger coop and run for them at the end of this month instead of spending money on his pond as he planned bless him,ty for the insight into what breeds we have,i though we had 2 rhode island reds and a jersey giant after looking at endless pictures of breeds lol, yorkshirecoop im wondering if hubby builds larger coop/run for these if my existing run and coop would be ok for a couple of polish,i just fell in love with them the other month when we visited a koi dealer who had loads running round and i cuddled one lol,and he gave us a dozen eggs which are so nice,my 3 ladies are paying for themselves with the eggs as i sell them at work to pay for food/bedding,but it means were not actually getting any eggs ourselves lol,so the polish would be just for us,hubby has seen a coop and run on here he'd like to copy off which is brounii's in the medium coop builds,he says it is a nice size and would allow us to get 2/3 more egg layers as i cant keep up with egg supply lol,he also says its the one he can probably build easiest haha, were also planning on moving it all up the top of the garden and making it so little dog cant get anywhere near as her constant barking at them is doing our heads in haha, thanks again to you all, cheers bev

Hi there :frow
I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back  Yes a bigger coop and run could help with them being integrated into your exsisting birds. Not all polish are the little wall flowers they look to be. It's just that most are but you may get a couple that will stand up for themselves. I have a couple of polish that take no messing even from my Amber link hen and she is much bigger than them. Where as others are very timid even in with just other polish. They are still super friendly though. You may well find that they do all get along together and things will be fine. It's just incase they don't that you may need to seperate them. As you have 2 warrens they may well accept them and all will be hunky dory. I've not keep blue bells but I've read lots of good things about them. I've found warrens quite docile as long as they have food!! I found them to be very food orientated.

Wishing you the best of luck if you get polish, they are a super friendly breed once they are tamed up.

thanks yorkshire, weve decided as i work silly long shifts to leave the polish for now,so im thinking another 3 good layers,im after some white speckled ones if anybody has recommendations, also i want to free range them a bit so nothing too flighty haha, cheers
