We are moving to rural NE TX soon and plan to get some easy birds for eggs. We don't want to get into meaty birds at this time as we are newbies.

Two adults, three nearly teenage kids, and the Ridgeback dogs completed our family at this time. My plan is to start with half a dozen RIRS and/or Plymouth Rock birds, for egg production.

Thanks for this site. We hope to learn a lot!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Which part of NE Texas are you moving to? My wife and I were both raised in NE Texas. :o) If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Thank you for the welcome. We will be in the Paris TX area, ideally in rural Lamar Co.

I think the Rhode Island Red's and Plymouth Rock's are excellent choices, I have a few of each!

If you want 6 birds, you could get 3 of each of the breeds you're interested in and have a pretty mixed flock. Having both would give you a chance to see the differences in feathering, temperament, etc.

If you'd like to connect with other members in TX, you can find them here:

You're welcome. Paris is fairly close to where my wife and I were raised (Blue Ridge for her, Greenville for me) and we have been through Paris on a number of occasions. Good luck with your move.
