Just joined

I currently have sixteen assorted chickens. Barred Rock, Buff, New Hampshire Red, and one Arcauna mix, and one Buff mix. They've all been surgically sexed, but recently one of our two year old hens grew a spur and stopped laying eggs. Now all our eggs are fertilized!

If you have not already, put your location in your profile, not your address or anything but at least your state that will help you get better advice, and speaking of advice....

Almost everyone here is an absolute expert on almost everything imaginable, take me for example I just left advice about freezing temps and I live in Southern California. So take the best and leave the rest.

Once you do get some good advice, and you will, then follow said advice... Example being the guy who burned down his coop after being advised not to use a heat lamp in the coop and then talks about how to place the heat lamp going forward in the new coop....

Stay away from religion and politics, its just not worth it

Oh, and build BIG, chicken math is real

Yes, flocks without roosters can cause the lead hen to take over this position, grow spurs and even crow! Especially older hens that no longer lay.

Welcome to BYC. A hen with ovarian problems/cancer may take on the characteristics of a rooster, but she can not produce sperm.

G’Day from down under Lokama Welcome!

I have a gender confused hen in an all girl flock. She crows occasionally and tries to mount the other girls but has not grown spurs. One of my Silkie hens had some pretty good spurs though. So, of course, I agree that this can happen but I have never heard of a gender confused hen changing to the extent that she can fertilize eggs

Anyways, I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.
