Nearly 4 weeks ago my husband and I went into our local RK and walked out the proud parents of 4 hens. 2 Plymouth Barred Rock and 2 Bantams. Two hours later we visited our local TSC and bought 4 more “hens.” 2 more Plymouth Barred Rock and 2 Rhode Island Red. (What can I say they are addicting.) We knew very little about chickens and had no plan to purchase them that day. (As a matter of fact someone else purchased the chicks for us at RK because she wanted 3 and the minimum purchase was 6. We both left with 4 each. )
Our HOA has rules about not having farm animals so none of our neighbors know we have them yet. Since the girls arrived I have searched the internet, read books and asked questions to all our poultry pals. We do live in the warm south and we homeschool so our girls will rarely be lonely. Our children immediately named the girls and help with their care. We plan to feed organicly and let them free range daily. The primary purpose of our chicks is egg production. I hope to one day move and start a homestead.
I’ll be looking for natural/organic means of pest control, health treats and general chicken care. It took us a couple weekends to build our coop and run. The girls will be moving out there soon. Still trying to decide on a name for the palace.
One of my local homesteading friends introduced me to this website and I have used it a ton since. Thank you for your help.

I hope you don't run into problems with your HOA. Chickens can and do make noise so they won't be a secret for long.

@KikisGirls- the coop said 8 to 10 chickens. 2 of ours are bantams. Hopefully it will work out.

Ref HOA: Luckily we leave in the cul de sac and the have about 50 acres on one side of us. Maybe we can smooth any problems with some free eggs, come September.
