Wing feather sexing is best done at 1 day old, the hens usually are already feathering at the tips of the pin feathers, the roos come on day 2-3 you can also look at the comb, usually you will be able to see a difference, obviously the roos will have a little one, the hens will hardly have anything

Without knowing if the chicks you got are bred to be feather sexable you will get confused sexing them. If they are vent sexable breeds you can have both fast and slow feathering females. All hatcheries that have their own breeders will have both. To mate the breeders each summer the hatcheries must maintain a grandparent stock of vent sexable birds.

Also one poster noted that Production Red males will be white - that is incorrect. Red Sex Link and Gold Sex Link males are white however, Rhode Island, Production and New Hampshire Reds all have similar colored males and females.

Also by looking at the comb - some breeds the females will begin to mature faster than the males just as humans do and appear to be males so be careful not to cull to soon.

I am so impatient, and this is killing me not knowing what these little fuzzies are going to be. But I will wait, and watch the new feathers come in to get a better clue as to what they are. some of the pail yellow ones are starting to get dark new feathers. I was looking at one the other day, and thought it had a bruise on it's breast area, and upon investigation it was new feathers! would you call them pin feathers for now? not sure...anyways, now a lot of them are getting the dark new feathers, so I can start to think that those are my assorted Reds. mainly I just really want to know if I have a lot of Roos, (out of the 11 assorted reds anyways) I had better have at least 5 pullets, because that's what I paid for. anyways, I have given up and will try my best to be patient on this. and will up date regularly. thanks for all the input
