Just lost 2 chickens today, have one injured, dog attack

If you dribble some electrolyte solution along her beak using a eye dropper you might get her to drink. The neosporin without pain killers will do the trick provided the wound is clean, if it is smelling the bird will likely need antibiotics. You might have to get some vet wrap to prevent her from moving the wing while you are treating her and to help with the healing . I can't help you there, if there is a good feed store around talk to them, they usually carry several medications for various animals. Hopefully you can find a vet that will care for your chicken, you will likely discover that most of them will not treat chickens.

Good luck.

If the wound is stinky then you need to get some antibiotics into her ASAP. It seems very soon for an infection to have set in. When you say the wing is detached do you mean that the bones are broken? Could the blood supply have been damaged? Is the wing cold to the touch? If the bones are broken and the wing is infected then you might need to consider something radical like amputation.

You also may start to consider whether this bird should be saved. Chickens are tough as an old boot, so she she probably can be saved. The question becomes should you save her? She is going to have a long road to recovery ahead of her, if she recovers. It may be better for all involved if she doesn't linger in a lot of pain for weeks or months.

Last year I had a hen survive a hawk attack (barely) and the subsequent infection. It took months of isolation from her flock to heal. She healed, but because of her much changed appearance and months of being away from her flock, she was not allowed back into the flock. She had to be re-homed for her safety. She is still alive today although she carries some hideous scars, but I have often thought that it was selfish of me to have saved that bird. She suffered a terrible wound, a terrible infection and 2 months of isolation, which is a particularly cruel punishment for a flock animal. I wanted to prove that I could save her, but I didn't (at the time) consider whether I should save her. In the intervening time I have often thought that should I be presented with the same situation again I would cull the bird to save her from the suffering I inflicted on the first bird. I did that bird a disservice by saving her life. It was cruel of me, and I was a coward for not having the heart to cull her. I should have just sucked it up and put her down as she deserved.

It can be amazing what a chicken can survive. As fragile as they are she may still make it through. Time will tell. You may have to force feed her some water, vinegar, antibiotics ect. Hopefully that will get her on a quicker road to recovery. We wish you the best.

PS Shoot the dog the next time it comes onto your property. The life of your chickens are more important than a predatory neighbors dog. Chickens need you to protect them.

The wound looks as if the dog had a hold of her by the wing and she pulled as hard as she could to get away. You can see the meat on her and it is starting to smell like I said rotten meat and I not sure but I know she can't stand very well or walk so she either has a broken leg or leggs. No the wing is not cold to the touch it is hard to explain but it is just like I said it was if the dog had a hold of her and she did everything just to pull away as if her wind was just ripping off of her. that is the thing I don't know how to mend or clean a wound this way without putting her in alot of pain and then I would need to figure if her leg/legs broken or could they get dislocated? I know it will be a long time to get her well and she probably will be away from the flock for months. What Kind of antibiotics would I need to give her? I will maybe talk to some feed store people to see what they suggest. Thanks again everyone. And next time the dog comes around I will be waiting.
