After a lot of research on the Web

and on this forum, I decided to order from Meyer Hatchery. This is the first time I have ordered chicks, I usually get them from the feed store but I wanted some different breeds. I ordered a big variety 1 Buff Brahma, 1 Light Brahma, 2 Columbian Wyandotte, 2 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, 2 Speckled Sussex, 2 Rhode Island Red, 2 Cuckoo Maran, 2 Golden Buff/Red Star, 2 Salmon Favorelle, 2 Blue Cochin Standard, 2 Ancona, 3 Easter Eggers, and 3 Delaware. All Pullets. If I get a rooster or 2 at least he will be in the minority. They will be delivered the week of June 27th.

Now to start construction on my new improved chicken house. It's going to be 8 x 12 with a 14 x12 attached run and the chickens can free range during the day on my 3 acres.

I'm excited and will try to start a page to post pics as soon as I get started. Need to wait until it warms up a bit.

It's very cold in New Mexico right now.

Will you brood them indoors or outdoors? I have done two batches indoors and it was fun, but my word,... the dust!! I felt I could control the temp and food/water better indoors but my wife raised 20 grades of hades about the mess! They will grow so fast so your space for 26 will shrink. Have a way to expand quickly. Oh, and get some pics up quickly!

Your situation sounds just like mine...except my chicks will be here in 2 weeks...started adding the 8x14 coop ext. today...chicks can be so addicting. I too got a wide assortment...a couple of each to figure out which breeds I like the best. Mine too free range on 2 acres. So exciting...the wait is going to be killer...mine was only 6 weeks and it feels like 100.

Have fun!!

I plan on setting up a brooding area in the new coop. It will be able to be expanded or taken down as needed. June/July in NM is hot so they may only need the heat lamp at night but it will be available to them at all times. The end of June is a few months away but I know it will be here closer than I think.
