I don't have a chicken with a broken wing, but I was thinking about it today when I was watching my 12 week old Silkies flap about. How do you fix a broken wing if you can't get to a vet? Also, does it happen often?
Depends on the severity of the fracture, and where the break occurred. Preferably pins or some sort of external coaptation device would be set in place by a vet for fracture stabilization, but in some cases doing a figure-eight wrap is sufficient for most injures of the wing spectrum. A fracture of the ulna grants a better prognosis as the radious is parallel and naturally acts as a splint. In some cases, the break can only be managed at home, not treated, but you will find most require a figure eight-wrap, lots of rest, and nutritional support.
