I have food available 24/7 pellets, they are free range and they don't eat more than they need, but as said above they will come running for treats. I am talking about pellets, I am not sure about other things

Lol, we leave a hanging food container for our girls in the run and they eat till full and then scratch and roll in dirt or sand and do other chicken activities

can you ever put enough food out for your chickens that they will simply stop eating it and go lay down or do they eat until they need to get wheeled away in a wheelbarrow. It would seem the wheelbarrow

If they're pan fed & you happen to give them more than normal, they might go lay down; not sure. I've never had the problem; always use self feeders.
Here's one I built, patterned off of one I saw on BYC. They'll eat off & on all day, but never much at once; they know it's there whenever they want it.

I agree with the other posters that chickens don't eat non-stop. Mine lounge around quite a bit in their run. The seem more prone to constant eating when they are out free ranging. I also give mine a smorgasbord treat tray daily and I've seen hens eat some of their favorite things off the tray and then walk away to keep foraging.

Made 2 of them takes 2 coffee cans of feed to fill them one they eat/ waste by scratching it out in a day other lasts longer but birds do free range...crop always bulging so they are eating well

Just like whenever you refill their water containers it doesn't matter that there's actually still a bunch of water in it but when you dump it and refill it they act like they've never seen it before

If that were a totally true statement then why is it if I walk out of the house whether I have food or not we will come streaming across the yard like a flock of velociraptors and God help me if anything falls out of my hands.

For the same reason I might be completely sated from a meal and yet come runing if I see you have chocolate cake

All of this. LOL My birds know the sound of my car compared to my bfs. When the front door opens they look to see who it is. Once I get close enough the walk along the fence clucking. If it's my bf they see it's him and walk off. LOL They know who spoils them.
