New chicken mama here with an existing flock of new layers and a set of 3 gifted school incubation project chicks! Never realized chickens could consume so much time! Our kids have probably made it doubly fun and they are learning so much. Just wanted to pop in to say "Hello!" and thanks for all the great advice thus far!

We love talking about poultry, so feel free to ask any questions you may have, make comments, or just post fun pictures or stories.

Best of luck with your new flock!

Bless you for teaching our children! Funny how a little chicken and a dedicated teacher can teach such huge lessons. BYC has great knowledgeable folks that can help you be efficient and save time. Welcome!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. Our children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loved our chickens and made lap pets of the calmer and more gentle breeds. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

The kids make it so much fun and are so funny about caring for the chickens. For months they have been going out first thing to clean the coop every morning (and now to check for eggs too). I didn't think the daily coop cleaning would last as long as it has, but I venture to guess that we probably have one of the cleanest coops on the east coast! I don't expect it to continue daily, but am pretty confident they are building in some pretty good habits that will last.

When the chickens started laying, it was a game to figure out which chx laid the new egg. They would camp out each day waiting for the layer and were so amazed at the actual egg laying process. Looked up the whole works about how an egg is produced, etc so they could see the science and wonder behind it all. So neat!

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. :)
