have a 7+ yo pekin duck that started lameness appx. 1 yr. ago on right leg and she's struggling a little more now. although she IS still eating,etc.. fine she just struggles to get around. discussed it with my son this a.m.(got lots of silly advice) and came up with a plan to shoot her when she can no longer ambulate. we made an in-ground small pool for her that she uses but she doesn't stay in it long so... just sad.

Im sorry to hear that you are losing your lil one .. May i suggest that you use a hatchet or axe instead of shooting , shooting an animal does not garuntee instant death severing the head does.. I am not trying to upset you just want to make sure your sweet pet does not suffer needlessly...

thanks for caring and I DO prefer the axe but don't know if I can do it and my son (the brave one that axes all of my meaties for me) is having a hard time wanting to axe her so....when the actual time comes I will hopefully hormone up or talk him into the axe. on to something else!

A shot to the head destroying the brain will have the same effect as an axe. I don't know if you have her with drakes or not, but if so, I would take them away. They may be causing more trauma while mating her. It is always difficult when this happens to animals that have shared our lives for a significant period of time. As responsible owners we do what we have to do. I commend you.

she IS with 1 drake and only notice an occassional mating in water(in-ground duck pool for them)(they are right outside my back door in kennel at night) and given that they love each other(you know what i mean) I can't bring myself to seperate them. I would opt to end it if it gets that bad. guess it would help to have more females so she could room with one and leave other with him. more ducks. thank you for giving me these thoughts. now I am going hunting for more female pekins.being silly-don't be offended.
