Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm new to raising chickens properly. Someone gave me a dozen eggs a couple of years ago. Some were white, some green and some brown. I stuck them under a friend's hen, and ended up w/4 roosters, and 3 hens. I sold 3 of the roosters. One hen was killed by a dog, 1 by a hawk, and 1 is crippled. This past winter, I decided to get some more chicks. I got 4 araucana "hens". I wasn't sure of the breed of my rooster (I think he might be an Ameraucana), but planned on having him in w/my hens. Well, one of the hens turned out to be a rooster, and my friend is complaining about them, so I need to get rid of the 1. As much as I hate to do it, I'm getting rid of my 1st rooster since I'm not sure of the breed. He's a prettier rooster. I've managed to find a friend that wants him, so he'll be going there some time this month.

Besides my chickens, I also have 2 goats, 3 horses, 2 rabbits and 2 cats. The one cat lives at my friend's farm. I do self care of my horses, and she let me build a small shed for my tack and feed, so the one cat lives in there to discourage the mice. And, one of her favorite places to be is in w/my chickens! Not only does she like to go in there w/them, but I'll often see her perched up on top of the one post by the gate. The one chicken is really friendly, and it's not unusual for me to have a cat on my lap, and a chicken on my shoulder when I eat lunch. Plus, the 2 of them will follow me around at times when I'm feeding the horses. I'm sure it must look strange to other people to see someone being followed by a cat and a chicken!

Right now, my chickens are living in an old calf house. But, b4 winter, I plan on building them a proper house. I'll be looking at the different plans on here b4 I do any building. Any tips, hints, or whatever would be greatly appreciated.
