Hello
Here's my intro: Moved to East Texas from Northeast Indiana, 5 years ago. I miss the Wolf Lake Bird Swap! I started with 200 chickens, here, but every time I left my property, a dozen came up missing. Once, 50 birds disappeared. That was when the neighbor built his chicken coop. I decided to shy away from birds and raise a few cattle. The ear tags disappeared right away so I expected cattle thievery next. Anyway, it reached the boiling point and it didn't happen. I sold my first calves last week and took a beating. I'm out of the cattle business but fortunately I kept hatching and raising a few chickens, geese, ducks, quail and turkeys. I was originally giving all my eggs to the Salvation Army until one day, when I was dropping them off, and elderly lady recognized the Americanas eggs, so I said, "Here, take a dozen, but if you want the egg carton, you'll have to give me a quarter." Well, I the Salvation Army lady got mad and told me that I couldn't SELL anything on their property! HA! I realized that they were stealing the eggs and not passing them out to anyone but their friends. I managed a DAV Thrift Store, once, and had trouble with my helpers stealing. So, I took the eggs to the Rescue Mission for the homeless. I averaged about 150 eggs a week. It was a 60 mile drive for me and I found a mission closer, and started giving them my eggs, but as my chickens disappeared, my eggcount dwindled. I finally gave up and just built a refrigerator incubator to raise for myself. I wanted to sell eggs at the farmers market but they won't let me. Won't let me sell baby chicks, either. The County Extension Agent won't even talk to me about it. Anyway, I just found a small town, nearby, in Louisiana, that will let me sell chicks at their Farmer's Market, so I decided it was time to join a forum. I've visited here before, but now I'm BACK! For a little while, anyway, because I need help. I don't want to ruin this opportunity for myself, or anyone else. I spoke with the people at their Town Hall, and they said they didn't see any reason why I couldn't sell chicks because they don't have an ordinance against it YET. YET jumped out at me. I don't want any problems. There is an opportunity to start another future bird swap. They said they had someone sell some guineas, once. My concern is packaging the birds when I sell them. Boxes are EXPENSIVE! I'm searching for options. Anyway, hello.
