Hi, I just signed up so I'm totally new to this. I live in Fukuoka, Japan and have recently started raising chicken. My chicken run and coop will be ready in a week and until finished I keep my 7 chicken (now 6 weeks old) in a fenced off area in our garden. This morning all 7 were there and at lunchtime one was missing. Almost no feathers in the run (just 5 or 6 very small ones), no blood, no trace whatsoever. I'm totally flabbergasted to what could have happened. We do get the occasional cat around here but when I was a kid we had chicken and as far as I remember when a cat killed a chicken she left a total mess. Does anyone have any suggestions? The area was fenced on the sides and on top. the top part was not really predator proof but if a predator went in wouldn't there be a big mess? Thanks for any suggestions/help. I'M pretty depressed cause I love my girls.... have to tell it to my daughter when she'll come back from school...

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sorry to hear you have lost a chick :hugs It does sound like it could be a predator attack or you chick has somehow escaped. If it is a predator you need to make it more secure for them as soon as possible. Many predators will return once they know there is a free meal on offer. Also if one has escaped you still to make it more secure so no more are lost. Here is a section from the learning centre on predators https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/chicken-predators-pests-how-to-protect-treat-your-flock

Good luck, I hope you can keep the rest of them safe. Enjoy BYC :frow

Sorry to hear you've lost a chick. Depending on how big your birds are and the type of predator, it could be possible for a predator to take them without leaving a huge mess. I hope you'll check out the link @Yorkshire coop has given you.

Good luck to you and if you more questions, feel free to ask.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry for your loss :hugs Also be sure to check really well inside where they were in case it got stuck behind or under things etc.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. What type of predators do you have near you? Hawks may grab a meal and take it back to the nest to feed babies., rather than pluck and eat where they made a kill. So sorry you lost one.

I was just sitting here bored and figured its nice when you new to get aknowledged so I just said hi and welcome to the first couple pages. You must have been doing something similar to see me saying hello. No real reason just time to spare and being nice.

Haha, That's just what I was doing! Makes sense. Thank you for answering me.

I love this site but I have put post on before and nobody answered, nothing is more frustrating than nobody writing so I figured what the heck why not say hi to all the new people so they at least know someone is reading their stuff lol. I guess thats what being bored does for you.
